grimmwire: (Burn08 kaboom)

Took me over a week, but I finally unscrambled my brains enough to edit my photos from Burning Man, winnowing down 910 shots to a mere 145.

Portage

It was a great week, for the most part. As Montreal Regional Contact I was proud to see our community come together to build an artwork to represent our region in this year's CORE -- the Circle of Regional Effigies. "Portage" was a lovely work and it burned spectacularly. I had the honour of working on the CORE Burn perimeter on Thursday night; that was glorious. When the legs finally burned through, Portage came down with a most satisfyingly loud series of CRACKs, CRUNCHes, and THUDs.

But for me the real reward was the energy the project has generated in the Montreal Burner community, bringing us together into a coherent team, transcending boundaries of language and culture. Can't wait to see what the Bruleurs cook up next!

It was wonderful to camp with the Penguins again. I was with the Lost Penguin Cafe for my first Burn in 2005, but for some reason I camped elsewhere in '06, '08, and '09. Finally this year I returned to the flock. There is really something special about the Penguins; they work hard, have a strong sense of tribal identity, they're dedicated to hospitality and sharing, and they're a perverse bunch of flightless birds. What's not to love?

The Lost Penguin Three Penguins Cory & Science

As usual, the trip to the desert was trying, exhausting, and expensive, but well worth it. I didn't do and see a small fraction of all the things I wanted to do and see, but I guess I'm getting old. Just don't have the energy that I used to. It was bone cold most nights, and Friday night was a complete write-off due to horrendous wind and dust.

But I loved introducing my good friends Gloria and Owen (now "G-Spot" and "Sweaty Nut") to the Penguins and to the Playa. And who should happen to be camped across the street from the Penguins (at Liminal Labs) but an old SF-writing pal -- Cory Doctorow! One of those wacky Playa coincidences.

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that this is the purpose of Black Rock City: it's a big machine for the generation of coincidence.

Portage has burned. The Man has burned. So has Wall Street, and the Temple. And so we begin another Burner Year. Looking forward to taBURNak! the Fourth (Montreal's Decompression event), and onwards to ever greater things.

Next year will be even better!
